LION (2017) movie review

_93656775_d71534f8-df48-41d3-8aca-e3d2e8b77bd5Lion will break your heart. The trail of tears carved along the Indian countryside past too many train platforms to count takes little Saroo too far away from his mama to ever find his way back home.17-lion-oscars-campaign-w710-h473It’s Fievel’s American Tale journey all over again, but this story is true and doesn’t have the peppy tunes to promise a road back home.maxresdefaultThe perfectly cast visual carnival begins in a valley of butterflies, winds into the heart of busy Calcutta streets and flies over oceans all the way to Australia. Our tiny, steadfast hero becomes a man and has to deal with demons from his past, has to reconcile being a little boy lost, and must find his way home with a little help from Google Earth.saroo-brierly-by-dev-patel-in-lion-1000If all stories are meant to teach us survival skills, meant to show us alternative ways to live, to give us hope, this film certainly does all of this. Saroo, the lion-hearted will show us all how to live if we take the time to let him tell his tale.lion-dev-patel-rooney-mara-2

JACK REACHER (2016) movie review

jr2-03-1024x585Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher is still the bold-chested throat-kicker that’s not to be messed with. Tom’s vagabond Jack is on the road and roaming. Reclusive, he avoids interactions without punchlines, friendships, or family ties.  This character reserves his smiles for the deserving, and it seems none are truly deserving. His fight or flight responses usually begin with warnings of how it will be done and end as he says they will.1774Brutality and daddy issues frame this almost road trip film as ex-marine Jack finds a friend in his old office and asks her on a date. The day he drops in to meet her, she’s been imprisoned and falsely accused. jack1Jack to the rescue. Jack on his own. Handsome and smart, he remains one step ahead of the other guys. Yet, there’s something inside of me that often questions the validity of his offensive moves… Sure some are defensive – someone’s coming to kill him so he kills them first. But this kind of violence seems too commonplace and somehow unextraordinary.  jack-reacher-tom-cruise-sliceSomehow it’s the opposite of what Jack Reacher really does stand for. He’s a rogue on a mission… Always alone, always fighting. What is he fighting for if he doesn’t stand for something? Is he actually a vigilante? We asked the same of Batman… So why not Jack?

FANTASTIC BEASTS and Where To Find Them (2016) movie review

maxresdefaultSweet and meek Newt Scamander seeks to protect and keep the beasts he shelters from those who would inflict harm on them. He docks at the old harbor in New York City only to run smack dab into the magic police who claim that rules for wand and magic usage are quite different across the pond.

From glossy pluck to murderous violence, Beasts delights then frightens. It’s very dark, and Farrell’s character plays nearly pedophilic in moments as he mentors a younger boy. The death scenes are equally disturbing.fantastic-beasts-where-find-themBut one glowing report is in the telling of the story. HP author, JK Rowling, tries her hand at screenwriting with skill and success. She carefully builds up her underdogs through circumstances that shape them into confident heroes, and her cruel antagonists get their proper comeuppances.banner And yes, the beasts themselves prove to be incredibly resourceful and resilient wild animals: truly fantastic.fantastic-beasts-and-where-to-find-them-creatures-the-rundown

MAGNIFICENT 7 (2016) movie review

magsevengunSeven against an army. Denzel Washington, leads a misfit gang of hired guns including Chris Pratt and Ethan Hawke to rush in and protect a town from the greasy, greedy bad man who threatens, steals from, and kills some of the poor, sweet, good-looking settlers. So when Denzel takes his “dually appointed Marshall” badge and secret revenge in to take out the tan trench-coated baddies with six-shooters, it’s High Noon meets Three Amigos.magnificent-seven-2016-images-washingtonBesides the group goal to go out guns blazing, the town prepares for war building giant spike gates and booby traps. Even so, without the Seven the town would have collapsed against the Gatling.images

Despite the dry and often delayed line pacing, the scenes work and the dialogue doesn’t get old. It didn’t feel overly Pratted with his one-liners. It has its Good, Bad, & Ugly tribute stares and lovely cinematography, and the actors give the sense that they had a blast making the film.

the-magnificent-seven-2016-haley-bennettNewish actress Haley Bennett made the film more believable by riding out in tears and fighting in tears. She didn’t play the triumphant heroine, or the oppressed female. She showed an honest side to gun-slinging and territory claiming. She bootstrapped and got to work letting the battle begin, come what may.magnificent-seven-2016-castSo much killing was to be expected, but if they’d decided to go beyond the pg-13 rating, it would have been a bloodbath. How do we care for one specific life on the screen when so many are expendable? Surplus cowboys didn’t make the number of deaths easier to palate.images-1

Overall, it’s probably a 7 / 10. Fun and playful, but disturbing if you stop to consider body count, even in the Wild West.

HELL OR HIGH WATER (2016) movie review

thumbnail_24412A pair of brothers on the backward road to financial freedom, they are Texan Robin Hoods of sorts. County badge-toting partners in pursuit oddly parallel in partnerships unmatched by most film duos.gilbirmingham2One brother (Ben Foster – genius in 3:10 to Yuma) is a regular outlaw, always running from trouble, always finding it. He knows he’s bad. He gives himself permission to lie and steal and gamble and cheat and run and kill and fight anyone he can. The other brother, (Chris Pine, showing here his true acting prowess) complex and tortured, fights but holds back, reluctantly moving forward with his plan. His plan. He’s the potentially pure, the wounded, the driven, yet it is his story.hellorhighwaterrobbery-0The lead Marshall, played perfectly by Jeff Bridges, speaks his mind letting loose racial slurs and profanities, quick judgements and stereotypes. He is surprisingly savvy and astute as he tracks the boys committing the crimes. The partner patiently takes the brunt of the teasing. He is a Christian man, calm though disconcerted by endless jabs from his partner. He talks easily about retirement and afterlife since he knows where he is going.hell-or-high-water-2-e1471189384267These characters rarely say what they mean in dialogue. It’s brilliant writing that stirs and directs a plot without relying on forced verbiage to drive it. Humans rarely say what they truly mean, why should characters?

It’s Bridges’s character who parallels Pine’s. Both brooding, restless, uncertain, distant. They seek companionship, friendship, and love without resolve. Both have lost and feel they cannot earn it back. Both will pursue it to the end, come hell or high water.1zr8js5a-dfkubso6idxdha

JASON BOURNE (2016) movie review

jason-bourne-matt-damon-julia-stilesBourne’s still got it in this fresh-faced replica film. Still running. Still fighting. Still ghosting his way through crowds in major cities and defending himself with found kitchen ware.Jason Bourne (2016) He’s like an all-American Bond with MacGyver’s intuition. CAPTAIN FANTASTIC (2016) movie review

Captain Fantastic is just that: fantastic. But beware, it’s emotionally raw, bravely honest, and a little too personal for anyone who has dealt with real loss. Days later I’m still reeling, stopped in my tracks by moments of both pain and healing that I witnessed there in the woods and on the road with this family.thumbnail_24323Viggo Mortensen, perfectly cast, plays drill sergeant hippie Von Trapp to his tribe of children that he is raising in the Pacific Northwest woods. In the opening shots, his eldest son proves his manhood by killing a deer for food as camouflaged family members step out of the forest to cheer him on. They eat, sing, read, run, and train together daily from vigorous athletic routines and mountain climbing to gardening and essential yurt maintenance. Daily studies include literature, religion, and philosophy. The children are kind, hearty, smart, gifted individuals who grieve just like everyone else in the world when they learn of their mother’s suicide.jpgThis film is exquisitely unique showing the many sides of grief in a single brilliant brazen family from the backwoods. While some may watch and say, “what an interesting indie,” others will re-grieve any sorrows they’ve set aside and now find that they have company in saying goodbye.CF1_6738.jpg

THE DISAPPEARANCE OF ELEANOR RIGBY (2014)

p06-shoji-eleanor-a-20150213THEM. HER. HIM.

That’s the order to watch them in. The director made three films of the same story from three perspectives. Them (2014), he released a year after the other two. Despite the overlap, a distinct change in perception exists and shifts between the three. I found myself sympathizing with each character equally, depending on the perspective. However, the changes were subtle and the story often unaffected.

We are selfish beings who protect our own innocence and see ourselves as the victims. It is somehow healing to see the same story from three sides. It’s the essence of sociology. The same book sits on a table, but one person sitting there gets a view of the top edges and rough pages while another sees only the spine.c43b5da0aeb3cff0424300369501b945

This beautifully acted story tells the three sides of heartbreak as tragedy tugs at us all differently. Some, like the husband, swim headfirst under the wave of sorrow and into the torrents of business and busyness and every day existence hoping to come up on the other side unscathed. James McAvoy runs a failing restaurant in New York City with his best friend Bill Hader . His father, Ciaran Hinds, runs a successful restaurant and can offer little support or advice that will help his wounded son find what he also cannot.

disappearanceofeleanorrigby_splash650Others, like the wife, tumble in the riptide until fighting the wave feels too difficult and they want to give in to the dive knowing they’ll never resurface to breathe the same air again. Jessica Chastain dives and is reborn. She moves home, cuts her hair, starts over. She takes classes from the perfect teacher, Viola Davis . Sometimes, people inadvertently offer life-giving support just by sharing a coffee or a personal story. Her father, William Hurt, obviously aches beside his daughter but says little. No one can bring Eleanor Rigby back to life any more than they can revive her child. Healing takes time, turmoil, patience, forgiveness, and more love than any of them believe that they can spare.DISAPPEARANCE-master675

These films are not for the fearful, forlorn, or finicky.  They are dark, personal, pain-filled and foreboding. They deal in recovery, but hit bottom first. The layers serve to complicate and dissect the tumultuous waves of grief, which are unforeseeable and almost unnavigable,  much like real life.

THE MAN WHO KNEW INFINITY (2016) movie review

TheManWhoKnewInfinityStillThis film posits valuable notions like the incalculable potential of divine inspiration. It also asks: who are we to ponder the value of a life over a life’s work? Mathematical formulas and patterns were art that spoke of God to Srinivasa Ramanujan, who was taken under the wing of G.H. Hardy and who then became a Royal Fellow at Trinity College in Cambridge, England at the turn of the century during WWI. It was filmed beautifully in two locations: a remote area of India which looked like an early Madras, and Trinity College Cambridge in England. the-man-who-knew-infinity-0aDev Patel and Jeremy Irons partner up to prove mathematical equations in a style reminiscent of A Beautiful Mind, but in this film, the major conflict is cultural discord. The director says that the film is actually about nurturing relationships. Layers of relational potential and missed opportunities plague this true story.  Here is a beautiful interview with the writer / director,  Matt Brown.960

10 CLOVERFIELD LANE (2016) movie review

10-clover-field-lane-trailer-2-020-featured-630x39810 Cloverfield Lane, obviously an address and subsequent spinoff to Cloverfield (2008) when monsters took Manhattan ala shaky Blair Witch hand cam.

Almost everything about this movie is scary: the writing, the directing, the blatant lack of content disguised in faux mystery.review-the-terrifying-10-cloverfield-lane-kicks-off-the-next-great-movie-franchise.jpgThe heart was right. But the execution…abrupt and ill-conceived.10_cloverfield_lane_paramount_winstead.0.0The actors, however, proved themselves professionals. Mary Elizabeth Winstead (best as Ramona Flowers in Scott Pilgrim) and John Gallagher Jr. (from the beloved short-lived HBO series Newsroom and the perfect indie Short Term 12) cared that their roles were believable and strong.  John Goodman obviously enjoyed playing the crazy bunker-builder. They seemed eager participants in what felt like an experimental suck-up film, each shot an attempted homage to JJ or Spielberg. But even that would have been nice had this not felt more akin to Shayamalan’s more recent tragedies.

If you go in expecting monsters and aliens and jump scares and limited plot, I’m afraid…even with such low expectations, you too could be disappointed.10cloverfield-625x350It all felt forced, and left too many unsolved mysteries about the characters themselves: like the unsolved main issue of Michelle’s backstory and serious relationship on the rocks. Any real details about her Emmett in the hatch, oh sorry the bomb shelter. Man, good thing they barely had to redecorate the Lost set after Desmond set the place up. Aren’t they supposed to be hitting a button every 108 minutes?

The opening shots seem sincere, but pointless: big cardboard boxes in a small apartment and a girl feverishly packing. An earthquake that she dismisses. Then they zoom in on a set of keys and a wedding ring. Double zoom. Just so we don’t miss it. I despise forced focus. The director wants you to know she’s sad, so you zoom in on her face, then zoom in again on the tear itself. Single tear close-ups do not force empathy when the backstory is loose and limited. They attempt to build human connection through lengthy exposition. “When I was a kid…ap_10_cloverfield_lane_01_jc_160311_4x3_992

Questions that keep you watching remain unanswered. What was she running from? Is that guy who he says he is? What was the back up plan if she hadn’t been there to climb through the vent shaft? Do any of those book / song titles mean anything?Screen-Shot-2016-02-15-at-1.26.49-PMIf you wait for breadcrumbs to lead you to truth in this one, you’ll go hungry. They mean nothing in the end. (Wait. Maybe this IS another Lost finale.)2x01-JackLockeHatchI don’t know. Maybe people don’t go to the movies to think. Maybe I’m alone in blaming sloppy writing / directing. Sure JJ may have paid for it, but his MO is to support up-and-comers. He’s walking in the footsteps of his mentor Steven (Spielberg) and helping the fledgling directors take wing. Unfortunately, this Icharus not only flies too close to the sun, he flies into it inviting strangers from outerspace back with him to take over our planet. After this film, you’ll wonder which is worse: crazies on earth or crude angry aliens.

Sadly, this film felt a little too Room (2015) minus Brie Larson, meets War of the Worlds (2005), meets 5th season Lost. It’s a mess.10_cloverfield_lane_paramount.0
