THE HUNTSMAN: WINTER’S WAR (2016) movie review

the-huntsman-winters-war-1Liam Neeson narrates the bookended tales capping either side of this second Snow White.

The prologue finds the young Wicked Queen, Charlize Theron, gaining power and turning her little sister Emily Blunt to the dark side with a trauma that freezes her heart.8726255_the-huntsman-winters-war-featurette-_56826cd7_mBlunt as Ice Queen builds an army of kidnapped child soldiers in order to rid the world of love. Sadly for her, even the most highly trained automatons cannot erase emotional pangs, especially when Chris Hemsworth enters the room. If he liked a duck, it would probably develop a serious crush. So, Thor’s blonde tendrils woo even the stoic fighter Jessica Chastain as he waltzes through with his band of merry men hoping to save the world for love.90the-huntsman-winters-warMV5BMTU1OTgxMzEyNl5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwODE3MDE0ODE@._V1_The special effects scenes worked, perhaps because they included A-list actors in leather fighting each other: battle blades and arrows versus witching forces wielding weapons of ice, blood, fire and gold dust. This film felt a lot like the show Once Upon a Time in a tuneless Frozen recap minus the charming snowman and sisterly affection.la-et-hc-trailer-for-the-huntsman-winter-s-war-20151118

10 CLOVERFIELD LANE (2016) movie review

10-clover-field-lane-trailer-2-020-featured-630x39810 Cloverfield Lane, obviously an address and subsequent spinoff to Cloverfield (2008) when monsters took Manhattan ala shaky Blair Witch hand cam.

Almost everything about this movie is scary: the writing, the directing, the blatant lack of content disguised in faux mystery.review-the-terrifying-10-cloverfield-lane-kicks-off-the-next-great-movie-franchise.jpgThe heart was right. But the execution…abrupt and ill-conceived.10_cloverfield_lane_paramount_winstead.0.0The actors, however, proved themselves professionals. Mary Elizabeth Winstead (best as Ramona Flowers in Scott Pilgrim) and John Gallagher Jr. (from the beloved short-lived HBO series Newsroom and the perfect indie Short Term 12) cared that their roles were believable and strong.  John Goodman obviously enjoyed playing the crazy bunker-builder. They seemed eager participants in what felt like an experimental suck-up film, each shot an attempted homage to JJ or Spielberg. But even that would have been nice had this not felt more akin to Shayamalan’s more recent tragedies.

If you go in expecting monsters and aliens and jump scares and limited plot, I’m afraid…even with such low expectations, you too could be disappointed.10cloverfield-625x350It all felt forced, and left too many unsolved mysteries about the characters themselves: like the unsolved main issue of Michelle’s backstory and serious relationship on the rocks. Any real details about her Emmett in the hatch, oh sorry the bomb shelter. Man, good thing they barely had to redecorate the Lost set after Desmond set the place up. Aren’t they supposed to be hitting a button every 108 minutes?

The opening shots seem sincere, but pointless: big cardboard boxes in a small apartment and a girl feverishly packing. An earthquake that she dismisses. Then they zoom in on a set of keys and a wedding ring. Double zoom. Just so we don’t miss it. I despise forced focus. The director wants you to know she’s sad, so you zoom in on her face, then zoom in again on the tear itself. Single tear close-ups do not force empathy when the backstory is loose and limited. They attempt to build human connection through lengthy exposition. “When I was a kid…ap_10_cloverfield_lane_01_jc_160311_4x3_992

Questions that keep you watching remain unanswered. What was she running from? Is that guy who he says he is? What was the back up plan if she hadn’t been there to climb through the vent shaft? Do any of those book / song titles mean anything?Screen-Shot-2016-02-15-at-1.26.49-PMIf you wait for breadcrumbs to lead you to truth in this one, you’ll go hungry. They mean nothing in the end. (Wait. Maybe this IS another Lost finale.)2x01-JackLockeHatchI don’t know. Maybe people don’t go to the movies to think. Maybe I’m alone in blaming sloppy writing / directing. Sure JJ may have paid for it, but his MO is to support up-and-comers. He’s walking in the footsteps of his mentor Steven (Spielberg) and helping the fledgling directors take wing. Unfortunately, this Icharus not only flies too close to the sun, he flies into it inviting strangers from outerspace back with him to take over our planet. After this film, you’ll wonder which is worse: crazies on earth or crude angry aliens.

Sadly, this film felt a little too Room (2015) minus Brie Larson, meets War of the Worlds (2005), meets 5th season Lost. It’s a mess.10_cloverfield_lane_paramount.0

MAD MAX: FURY ROAD (2015) movie review

mad-max-fury-roadFuel and fire meet blood, sweat, and sand. Hell hath no fury… The scorned slave women held by the demon lord’s grip seek refuge in Furiosa’s getaway tanker War Rig. Charlize Theron may be the only woman alive who still manages stunning beauty under shaven, greased head, filth, and mechanical arm.mad-max-fury-road-charlize-theronTom Hardy’s Max, the namesake, dealing with grief and demons of his own past, is the accidental tourist “bloodbag” as he is called in this the 4th in a series of Max films by the same director, George Miller. Max is along for the ride of his life until he escapes in a torrent of cyclones, teams up, grows a heart, and finds a cause to chase on his own path to redemption.maxresdefaultMadMax-Fury-RoadEvery award well deserved, it’s a stunning, explosive, daring, brutal, artistic, masterpiece. Strangely beautiful in sweeping desert scapes and an unforgettable storm sequence. (But feel free to look away during the scene with the baby. You’ll know when it’s coming. Don’t watch. There is enough dust and chaos in this death race to more than compensate for a few moments of eye-shutting.)
maxresdefault-2MadMaxFuriosa.0Cinematographer, John Seale, connects to audience eye movement, drawing them shot for shot from one frame to another maintaining visual consistency. This concept is explained beautifully in this slightly crass but vivid and informative video called “How Mad Max Directed You!”MadMax_FuryRoad_trailerOne long, high-speed Road Back sequence, it’s stressful and grotesque at times. Max is quirky too. The film rumbles and quick takes from shot to shot, breakneck, offering only small doses of pace-break to catch a breath. So many die on fury road. Too many cultishly follow the tumored, jawless creature of a warlord, doing his bidding to the death. mad-max-immortan-joe-xlargeSomehow the plot is not lost in the action nor is the fight for justice, morality, and human dignity lost in the tumult.maxresdefault-1

SPECTRE (2015) movie review

Always the lone gun. Always on the move. Always sifting through cities for the faces of his enemies. Bond. James Bond.Daniel-Craig-as-James-Bond-on-the-Set-of-SPECTREUntil now, the blonde Bond has never cracked a smile, but what’s this? Could his Grinch heart have grown three sizes? Perhaps three to accommodate his number of female conquests per show. He’s still Bond…like a traveling salesman with a woman at ever port. Always the wanderer with a savior complex.daniel-craig-in-spectre-1940x1293Ever suave, adjusting cuff links, ever walking calmly away from burning buildings and exploding cars, shoulders first like an underwear model mid-photoshoot. His pristinely pressed and combed remains unscathed, and yet, the assassin Bond has perhaps grown a conscience about his occupation. His sins and the faces of those he hunted and killed haunt him more now.  Therefore the inner conflict of this film seemed to be Bond’s choice: when to pull the trigger or more so when not to. The audience gets the view from the scope many times thanks to director Sam Mendes. Don’t assume that Bond doesn’t still leave a massive body count in his wake, but somehow now he cares and needs to prove that mercy can triumph over justice sometimes and that killing isn’t always the answer. New leaf for a Bond film. For any film, actually. This one plays out more like a Mission Impossible or Borne film with a host of action scenes and stunts as our man lifts off from one helicopter to the next, half smiling and saluting, ready to take one more fist to the face to save the world. Yet amidst the action and excitement, it posits the moral quandary making each life valuable. spectre-B24_22176_rgb.0Still rather violent, but comparatively less blood than we’ve seen in the past. So many nods to classic Bonds, this one played more like Sean Connery’s Dr. No in certain scenes. Ralph Fiennes brings such perfect contrast in his role as the savvy and sorrowful new M. You feel his helplessness, and yet you trust that he has a trick up his sleeve. Christoph Waltz brings a quiet sophistication with his broad grin and brilliant bad guy persona. Sadly, his case is just a little too easily solved, this conflict easily taken care of. Holes in the plot seem to matter less than if the suit has been properly laundered. So relax. All is proper. All is lovely. All is calm and bright and classically shaken not stirred in Bond’s world.

STAR WARS VII The Force Awakens (2015) movie review

Now that you’ve seen it, let’s discuss.NEW-TRAILER-RELEASED-FOR-STAR-WARS-THE-FORCE-AWAKENS

J.J. Abrams, now sainted by the fan kingdom for performing the Christmas miracle of reviving an old whispered hope that Star Wars could return to its former gritty glory, did it. He did it. Every hint, allusion, repeated line, respected motif. It’s all there.Star-Wars-Force-AwakensThe nods to the Star Wars canon of films and universe lore were extensive. They allowed family and friends to participate on set in small ways and asked the old gang of concept artists to get back together to dream for VII.

I trust J.J. as a director for a plethora of reasons, and I respected him all the more when he called my friends who made this short “Open Letter to JJ Abrams” prior to filming to ask them for their thoughts as he started creating VII.

Anyone who could handle Trek fans with their Klingon blades at the ready can handle all of us teary-eyed New Hope hopefuls who just can’t handle any more 1-2-3 Jar Jar debacles.

Light, the constant motif, battles the Dark Side in thoughtful  parallels. The First Order, in the tradition of the Third Reich, allows Domhnall Gleeson his own St. Crispin’s Day speech as little Hitler. An incredible speech that no doubt would make the little Vader, Kylo Ren, jealous as they whine and fuss over who will sit at the right hand of Lord Snoke.maxresdefaultSo the CGI worked, as it appropriately nodded to George Lucas and ILM’s life works but didn’t go overboard. Most CG characters were meant to be despised. The likable oracle however, Maz Knata, with her all-seeing tiny eyes, had Han’s approval and therefore ours. He nods, we nod. He falls, we fall. We may have seen it coming, but it’s still a shock, no matter how poetic it was.rp5z2dwjyl7utj8wdphqThe power of the force was treated exactly like I’ve seen addiction. Ben Solo, now Kylo Ren, craves it, seeks it, cherishes it, blocks out all others. He’s addicted, swallowed by it. His father wants to rescue him at all costs. Han’s fatherly love is beautiful and sacrificial. Perfect.28463e2d-eb2d-4840-ad61-527409ae85ccWe also rejoice and applaud vigorously in theaters along with the new characters as they too rediscover old favorite characters, ships, weapons, and the mysteries of the force. My friend, Dusten (pictured below dressed as Kylo Ren for opening night, followed by his daughters in festive array. They are the best!) said that he loved how the three new characters were given Luke’s characteristics. It’s true, equal parts insecure orphan, trooper uniformed rescuer, and stellar pilot.IMG_7334 IMG_7335 IMG_4728These characters are wholly delightful and still full of mystery.  Daisy Ridley’s Rey character is brooding and searching but full of the force, and she has yet to show us her true potential. She made us believe in her universe. As I always say, a main character has to be pitiable and good at something for an audience to buy in, and her survival skills on point make her both.
75Fin, played by John Boyega, according to the exposition is basically one of Invisible Children’s rescues. He has his Jack from Lost’s savior complex in tact, and he’s reluctant enough to drop into any scenario with our support. We want him to win forever.

Poe is still a mystery, and I’m hoping that the next installment allows us to see his broken-hearted  backstory or career-driven intensity hault for comic relief or the greater good. Oscar Isaac. Love him immediately.

Leia, Han, and Luke looked good. The adventure is only beginning as there are worlds to save and new friends to make. So, may the light sabers of the season make your days all the more merry and bright.2015-12-16-1450300622-8118374-Star_WarsYou’ll have to go see it for yourself…

See the magical, mystical, force-filled, saber-fighting, falcon speeding, droid spinning, canteen buzzing, blaster waving, planet hopping, Wookie calling, smuggler running, wonder of a series reborn.

Happy Christmas to all!

Hunger Games MOCKINGJAY Part 2 (2015) movie review

d-13War inevitably results in collateral damage. Legs, arms, minds, whole lives forfeited while the opposition resets and plans next moves. Desperate times force characters to choose allegiances, values, alliances. Gamemakers reset within the city walls. None are safe. The victor hero and spokesperson, Katniss Everdeen, remains the ugly-crying face of the rebellion carrying her personal vendetta against President Snow up the steps of the Capitol.  Leading rebels in civil war proves more difficult post Peeta’s mind meld with Snow. Drama and a nice blend of peace and romance amidst explosions and chaos. In my opinion, these are not simply films. They are not made for entertainment alone. They cannot be. THE MARTIAN (2015) movie review

Matt-Damon-in-The-Martian-Movie-Wallpaper The Martian marches into the coveted “#1 movie in the world” spot for good reason. Ridley Scott hit another home run with a film that yet again seeks to bring Matt Damon home. We never grow tired of chasing that man. Private Ryan, the Bourne trilogy, Interstellar, now The Martian.maxresdefaultThis film is a giant leap for outer space storytelling after many films that take only small laborious steps from one malfunction to the next. This film achieves the same survival efforts but perks up the pace by blending them with upbeat attitudes and humor, a boost for math and science education, and a swell of hope.jessica-chastain-michael-pena-the-martianWe wonder if we’d make it. On the reality tv series Survivor, it’s more about interconnectivity and socio-relational survival. You’ve gotta win the trust of the right people. LOST (2006-2012) tv series review

2000px-Lost_main_title.svg Lost-15J.J. Abrams created this epic survivor series that hooked generations. No series has ever evoked such seismic emotional turmoil internationally. People cared about Kate, Jack, Charlie, Hurley, Sawyer, Sayid, Jin, Sun, Walt, John, Claire, Desmond and even Michael for so much longer than they wanted to admit.lost_kubricks1There are essentially three camps of audience members: the Front Section that watched faithfully week-to-week, the Tail Section that petered off somewhere around mid-season two, and the Darmahites who binge watched on Netflix or dvd deeming it a “cool show” some years later, making LOST a true cult classic.1x02_BeginningOfAFriendshipDespite the stats, the inevitable questions were posed by all three groups:
What is going on?
What’s with that island?
Is it purgatory?
Are they dead?
Have they been dead all along?
If so, why have I been wasting my life on this inane show?set_lost_10year_smokeThe answers are rarely given and are usually simpler than we care to believe. The show was genius. It played on just the right emotions. It drew us in from moment one with great characters and writing. We believed that there was hope, so we kept watching. Hope is a seed planted which sprouts action and blossoms in destiny.

It seemed that each character had a story worth telling, a potentially fatal flaw to overcome, a past to run from, a new beginning to make, a skill to contribute, a joy to be found, a lesson to learn, a fate to resolve. The island was this setting, a placemat, a map. At the end of the 4th season, fans had basically earned an undergrad degree in Lost lore. The grad program started with the total switch up to flash-forward and the division of main characters. As the 5th season began, Jack yelled his famous line, “Kate, we have to go back!”Lost_pilot_plane_carnage

Lost-The-End-01-2010-05-24

The show was a touchdown, a major success despite the obvious Finale episode debacle, (which is another rant for a different time). For now, I  thought that it was time I came clean, in full disclosure, before another human asks me if I trust J.J. with the next Star Wars. I am a fan of LOST, and somehow that trust build over time gives me hope for our galactic destiny. Yes.32fa4bf9cb2e4f3d7a097d8f95ac82d3
