GHOSTBUSTERS (2016) movie review

ghostbusters-2016-movie-trailerA veritable cavalcade of specters parade New York’s busy streets, and “who you gonna call?”

The new generation of Ghostbusters are equally as bumbling and goofy as their predecessors. But these spirited hunters have Ph.Ds and new talents and toys to help them take down the prevailing spirits. They “ain’t afraid of no ghosts.”PHeiDZe8WJg8hl_1_lThese SNL favs and friends know how to get a laugh. They are made to entertain. They laugh at themselves first, and it works. These funny women of New York have taken Hollywood by storm and come back to town with bigger names and top billing. They’ve earned it. Chris Hemsworth also runs havoc as the team’s dimwitted receptionist and top poltergeist target.ghostbusters-2016-reboot-movie-review-chris-hemsworthWhether or not it works in the box office, it pays proper homage to fans and original stars. The script works and the team gels. It’s funny, playful, sarcastic, and fun. In a cultural twist, it’s the female ensemble that consistently objectifies men. Well, one man. Just Chris. And who can blame them for that? Not I.

I give it a 7.5 / 10 and I’ll see it again!

HAIL, CAESAR! (2016) movie review

Hail-Caesar-2016-2Hail, Caesar! is a delight. Set in the fifties at the height of musical movie madness, it was a time when Gene Kelly and favorite dance partner Fred Astaire tapped and swooned to golden tunes, when every woman wanted sharp-witted Clark Gable or leather-tanned Cary Grant to sweep them up, when the ladies of the hour were few but interchangeable unless they could stand out as dancers or swimmers. The silver screen was a small world full of dazzling stars with clean slates.hail-caesar-tv-spot-3Here in Hail, an ensemble of A+ stars play one-dimensional dolts and hardline honeys clamping Clooney in with communists, sharing Fiennes’s finesse as a classic actor, making Tatum tap on tables, and showing Scarlett Jo flap her fins. It’s elegantly laced with narration following the work day of Josh Brolin, one heartfelt Hollywood Studio manager bent on doing what is right.Hail__Caesar__Offi_1055160aThree layers pervade the dialogue throughout the film: the existing value, despite obvious divisions, within religious beliefs, political biases, and movie making.hail-caesar-680x400We follow the film producer who questions the merits of the industry and his work in it. Walking the ridgepole of his decision, he scoops in as handyman at the helm holding all things at the studio in harmony, fending off poparazzi wolves, endearingly all played by Tilda Swinton. hail caesar review mainWe attend a premiere with a fresh faced all-western cowhand. He croons sincerely while the audience roars over slapstick sloshings. Division. Value?Hail-Caesar-2016-17Clooney’s character is held hostage by men claiming to be communist writers who feel they must buck the system and capsize the studio called the Capitol.thumbnail_23310The film Hail, Caesar! is the film within the film showing a Roman guard gaining perspective for life and truth at the feet of the crucified Christ. An honest dialogue between four faiths ensues, speaking the blatant confusing disparities without preaching tolerance and without honoring one above another. The audience sits in, laughs, enjoys.img5So, religion & politics, long-time taboo topics, are fair game for the Coens who even take stabs at their own art: filmmaking. Could it be that the Coen brothers, perhaps better known for writing and directing darker films like Fargo and No Country for Old Men, have made a picture for the picture’s sake? For fun? Poking fun at film has rarely been this delightful. Shakespeare did the same thing, sneering at all people groups, allowing for pure comedy to shine through, for people to laugh at each other, at themselves, at life. 5184Hail the conquering Coens as they cart us along by chariot in this perfectly lovely philosophical journey dipped in sweet, aesthetic, syrupy comedy.

Would that it were so simple.hail-caesar-alden-ehrenrich-ralph-fiennes-1

THE INTERN (2015) movie review

We all love De Niro. We cuddle and coo as he leans in making faces at us all. He could make a silent film, and the world would return his mutual affection.AP_the_intern_jef_150925_16x9_992Anne Hathaway, I am convinced, is Shakespeare’s vampire-bitten wife by the same name, ageless and continually remaking Princess Diaries and the Devil Wears Prada. She’s finally made it as her own boss in this one, and she is determined to show that she can run a company all by herself without becoming a hateful, bitter, or too busy to have a family. file_607859_intern-trailerThis film promotes the positive business model of improving a work-life balance. It examines the pitfalls of start-ups, the benefit of experienced voices in the workplace, and the process of mentoring. Obvious from the previews, it’s an anti-agism play, but DeNiro rises as the professional for his kindness, his offering of time, his gracious attitude, and his personal initiative. He alone proves that gentlemen do exist and pocket squares are proof. The office falls for him, and his reward is helping each co-worker find success. If that were every worker’s personal motto, the face of business would be changed.  Seeing this on the heels of Steve Jobs (2015) proved a fascinating study on growing businesses, sharing ideas, and becoming a business leader. Where Jobs repulsed, DeNiro wooed.  TIN-FP-0076The Intern, which feels a great deal like an attempted sequel to The Internship (2013) is full of Home Alone hyjinx and freshmen boys bathroom humor. Not enough to be sorry I saw it, but enough to never really need to see it again.rRT8eTougmCkqmRE9oESKahfO9X

THE SECOND BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL (2015) movie review

pg-28-oldie-filmsGo back for seconds if you enjoyed the first. This addition picks up the same story a few months later and offers more depth, color,  humor, and sweetness.

A few more likable characters also grace the screen, but old favorites stay favorites.unnamed-29 The traditions of Indian wedding celebrations set the timing and pace for events in the film. You will want to discover this India: the joy of music and dancing, the encouragement of friends and feasts, the companionship in conversation, and the honor of heritage in this most vividly adorned culture.Packed-matinees-a-scene-f-007

ALOHA (2015) movie review

920x920I’ve always wondered what it would be like to see some of my favorite actors as children. The kindergarten effect: emotional roller coasters, needing snacks and naps, afraid of odd things, dancing to whatever music plays, having pointless sleepovers, wrecking stuff at will, yelling and calling names, friending and unfriending, saying the darn’dest things.

ALOHA (2015) fulfilled that birthday wish. What a surprise to sit in stunned awe at the total lack of continuity – as if they filmed it all backwards as a joke and forgot to fix it, as if they spliced in a few decent shots of great actors but thought it would be quirky to have them speak in total nonsense or silence (sometimes with subtitles), or as if they tried to make another film…how about Ernest Goes to Hawaii…minus Ernest.

It’s that bad.emma-stone-ewwSave yourself. Avoid. See anything but this. A great review that I read called this film a more impressive disaster film than San Andreas starring “The Rock,” also debuting this weekend.

Don’t be persuaded by the perfect cast of blue-eyed beauties or the promise of Bill Murrayisms. Even Alec Baldwin couldn’t save it.normal_001n-ALOHA-TRAILER-large5701024x1024

Here is an unrelated clip by the same name that was shockingly less confusing and almost more enjoyable than the film Aloha:

ANNIE (2014) movie review

annie-poster-106479Despite her hard-knock life, little Quvenzhane Wallis sees sunshine in every tomorrow.

Jamie Foxx woos audiences on each and every corner of NYC with his likable expressions and a voice like butter, but it’s Rose Byrne who knows she’s never fully dressed without a smile and helps charm little Annie into thinking she’s gonna like it here.

Cameron Diaz takes easy street as a surprisingly believable Ms. Hannigan, the evil caretaker for the all the little girls and former member of C+C Music Factory.

Maybe Annie will seize the opportunity to find her family, but most likely she will figure out that she doesn’t need anyone but you!

This remake was darling, vastly more entertaining and enjoyable than I ever expected it to be. 75

HALLMARK MOVIES at Christmas

MerryMixup_0262UEverything I ever needed to know I learned from Hallmark movies…

1. If business men are deeply in love with their jobs, they will never love Christmas. Or you.

2. Small towns become “Christmas towns” every December and always have a tree lighting, a perfect coffee shop for meeting up, and a man who looks uncannily like St. Nick. Children know this. They are wise beyond their years.

3. It’s truly amazing how very small items like an ornament, a cookie, a mitten, or a book can miraculously transform a heart and make it grow three sizes at least.

4. 37-year-old businesswomen have been so busy doing good for the world that they’ve missed out and now deserve all of the love and attention from everyone in their lives so they can find love at Christmastime.

5. Everyone should support small businesses and personal dreams.

6. Names matter. Noel. Kris. Nick. Joy. Kringle. Prancer.

7. Being brave may include visiting a new world, trying a new look, a new job, even impressing royalty, but mostly it means standing up for what you believe in.

8. Ice skating should be a real Christmas tradition because it’s both a sport and a way to bring people together. People rarely fall, but when they do, they laugh.

9. Love is hard to spot it first. But heads up – it always turns out to be the most amiable, best looking guy in town who also loves Christmas the most.

10. Miracles do happen…especially at Christmas. “It’s a Christmas miracle.”

90A few favorites include :
Northpole – Tiffani Thiessen, a mom first, journalist second must help her small son revive the Christmas joy in a small town and find love before the lack of Christmas spirit extinguishes the Northpole’s magic.

The Nine Lives of Christmas – Pet lover needs to let love in before her firefighter hunk (and actual Superman) flies away. They share so much. Especially quirk, good looks, and a love for cats.

A Bride for Christmas –  Thrice engaged interior designer must get over her commitment issues before she loses her new client and real man of her dreams. It’s Runaway Bride meets How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days…at Christmas.

A Boyfriend for Christmas – It’s self explanatory, really.

Christmas at Cartwrights – Single mom must secretly take a job as Santa Clause and hide her real identity or risk eviction and losing the love of the hunky manager of the men’s department.

A Royal Christmas – Philly girl must fit in with royalty if she wants to become Princess Bride.  Starring Dr. Quinn and the girl from Party of Five, it’s the Prince & Me…at Christmas.

MAGIC IN THE MOONLIGHT (2014) movie review

Magic-in-the-Moonlight-Emma-StoneGreetings from beyond the grave… Knock once for yes and twice for no.

Would you call this film one of Woody Allen’s best?

One knock.

magic-in-the-moonlight-colin-firth-emma-stone-600x399We do write ourselves into characters, writing what we know, but don’t you think that the delightful, big-eyed Emma Stone is too many decades the junior to our flawed likable hero Colin Firth?

Two knocks.

True, Allen would have no trouble with the age-old question, so it could be good to note Allen’s perspective walking into this film. I believe that Allen’s accolades, well deserved, should not be withheld in lieu of his life choices. That’s taking personal vendettas too far. He is a brilliant filmmaker and writer. No question. He still pushes boundaries making viewers think. I have great respect for that skill as he puts it to use.

On a similar note, Allen girls rarely resemble Bond girls. Allen’s women are bold, conversational, talented, complex, sometimes quixotic but still intelligent, sexy, and confident.  Allen paints women that women don’t mind watching and can relate to. Emma Stone is no exception. She is exceptional. Wouldn’t you agree?

One knock.

DSCF0410.RAFThis film waxes Gatsby, doesn’t it?

One knock.

Lush 20’s sets, costumes, and lighting: perfect from every feathered hat to draping beaded gown. It’s silver screen smudged hues on golden twilight backdrops transport these modern actors into a golden age of Hollywood. You expect Cary Grant to attend the party and Grace Kelly to step into the scene for a quick visit at any point.

magic_article_story_largeMagic in the Moonlight is a talkie, but the lack of action is rarely felt.  Audience members are allowed somehow to feel equal with the characters on-screen.  Tricked and sung to, questioned and valued.  The actors saunter from one room to another, adjusting bow ties pondering the weather and waxing philosophical. Allen unabashedly tackles common taboo topics like religion and politics. Perhaps like Scorcese whose seeming quest is to find himself redeemable, Allen’s obvious discussion on-screen mirrors this by asking  questions of the afterlife. This film questions the existence of God, mankind’s purpose on the planet, the truth in daily living, and the romance of magic.

Is he perhaps squeezing the brain to make room for the heart?

Three knocks.

Wait – what does that mean? Don’t you know? Okay, spirit from beyond, one final question:

Do you think that since Woody Allen’s last two films took place in France in the 20’s, that we can dare hope for  a trilogy of sorts?

One knock.

Wonderful! Thank you so much, kind spirit, for the interview from beyond. Until next time…

MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING (2013) movie review

MuchAdoWhedon-thumb-630xauto-26520Straight Shakespeare, and all black and white, but half way through I forgot both. This is a modern drunken romp through an old story.

Title and meaning: Shakespeare knew that this was a play based on misunderstanding and people making much of nothings, of well-placed bywords and hearsay. It’s all the dramatic irony of friends preying upon each other’s longings and relationships. A timely compliment or critique allows for the two feistiest creatures to believe that the other loves him, loves her. Then all infatuations are tested when exclusivity comes into question. The whole things looks to turn tragedy until you recall that Shakespeare played either /or, the twain never to meet. So it is comedy and all set aright with a few twists of fate and three veiled faces testing the young man’s honor and metal. Public disgrace makes room for public joy and, of course, a dance of forgiveness.

joss-whedon-much-ado-about-nothing-2012

See this film if you love the play. It does cross more moral lines than the play, but it maintains the PG-13. It gives new faces to beloved characters, and the actors are true professionals and Joss Whedon own friends gathering for this revival play at his own home. The players ring true as best friends spending the summer together at a friend’s house filming for fun. So much so that it feels a bit peep-holeish at times.
movies-much-ado-about-nothing-tom-lenk_1

The favorite guest is Nathan Fillion as Dogberry, a role I happily admit to playing in college. The lines are still dear and so funny. Fillion is lovable in every role, especially as title character in his show “Castle.”

Whedon is proving Jack-of-all & master-of-all. It seems he is a Midas where film is concerned, directing and writing sci-fi, action, and now Shakespeare well. Should he take up knitting, he could easily pearl a city.

RED 2 (2013) movie review

Red-2-2013-1

I can’t decide on a solid thumbs up or down on this one, so here is the good, bad, & ugly revealed:

The GOOD guys are still killers with blood lust. The one innocent character maintains an almost perverse fascination while holding to her “please don’t kill them” m.o..crop-RED2-004

Red-2-Can-you-shoot

The best of best actors converge here as quirky assassins offering and receiving relationship advice as they travel the world.bruce-willis-helen-mirren-red-2-teaser-trailer

The BAD: massive body count. Laughable to most audiences but unbelievable in sheer numbers. It’s almost all action and shooting. It of course has sweet moments, but mingled in murder. A scene that shows this most aptly is one in which Helen Mirren sits in evening gown, fur stole, and jewels offering tips over the phone on how to keep romance alive, all while she disposes of numerous bodies.red2_620_011813

The UGLY truth is that death is not well received in real life. One death in the family produces real and long lasting grief. What are we allowing with this senseless satisfaction in calling murder entertainment? Yes, I love a good crime drama. Hitchcock is a favorite, and he was quoted once saying, “I’ve brought murder back into the home where it belongs.” We often say we will protect children from watching too much violence and sex, but what about ourselves? Murder is wrong. We know this. But when do we begin to enjoy mayhem rather than protect our minds from the force of evil disguised as comedy?Anthony-Hopkins-Red-2-poster
